Handling Objections: I Have to Talk to My Spouse

Have you ever been talking to someone about your product, service, or opportunity and they said they needed to talk it over with their spouse first? In the industry we call it the spouse objection.

Don’t be alarmed. This is a common objection to get in the Network Marketing industry. If you haven’t heard it yet, then get ready. It’s only a matter of time before you do.

The important thing to keep in mind is that if they need to talk to their spouse, let them. Don’t try to close them in that exposure. That is literally the worst thing you can do. There is nothing that hurts a business more than an unsupportive spouse. If they say they need to speak to their spouse, then that’s what needs to happen.

Usually I respond with something like this:

“I completely understand, I needed to do the same thing when I was looking at this opportunity. May I make a suggestion on the most efficient way to do that?”

At this point I basically give them a homework assignment. This will also be a good activity to see if they’re going to be coachable or not if they join your team.

I tell them to go home and show their spouse a video, give them a magazine, have them watch a webinar, or listen to a conference call. It is very important that your prospect not try to go home and explain the business to their spouse because they will butcher it. Then if their spouse has questions or concerns they can get me on the phone to address them.

Above all else remember that it is of the utmost importance that you don’t end one exposure without setting up the next.

“When do you think you will be able to show your spouse the info? Friday? Great, could we get together for lunch on Saturday?”

If they haven’t shown their spouse the information by your scheduled appointment simply set up another one.

The best part about this homework activity is that you have just taught your prospect how to work their business without them even having a distributor ID number yet. Their first prospect will be their spouse. This action teaches them how to expose someone to the opportunity the correct way.
