How to Respond When Someone Asks What You Do for a Living

At some point in your life, I’m sure you’ve been asked what you do for a living. You probably didn’t think twice about the question and just gave an autopilot answer.

As far as MLM questions go, this is one of my favorites to get asked. It allows me the opportunity to prospect someone without them knowing that they’re being prospected.

When people ask you this question you need to somehow tell them that you’re in Network Marketing. The key is not to spill your popcorn before the picture show. Don’t talk about your product, service, or opportunity.

There are two concepts I want you to keep in mind when responding to this question. Create curiosity and peak their interest. Give them just enough information to achieve those two goals.

As far as what words to use exactly, as always, it will depend on many factors. Your personality, company, product or service, how much time you have to talk to them, and where you are located all play a role in how you should respond.

Just keep it light and creative and be sure that it creates curiosity and peaks their interest. Here are a couple of examples that I like:

If you’re full time in the business you can say something like this:

-“I get paid to help people create more income for their households and achieve their financial goals.”

Make sure you use verbiage that you would normally use. If you don’t talk like that then tweak the words to sound more like you.

If you’re part time in the business here are a few good responses:

-“I teach 5th grade and I’m a Network Marketing professional.”

-“I’m a mechanic but it’s my part time project that’s got me really excited.”

-“I clean teeth to earn my income but it’s my part time project that’s building my fortune.”

Remember, create curiosity and peak their interest. The goal is to say something that gets them to ask questions and want more information. When they do that, tell them it’s not the right time to get into it but you’d love to show them. Then, schedule an appointment to show the plan.

It’s just that simple. Put yourself in a position of control and maintain your posture. When curiosity and interest is on your side you’ll have the upper hand every time.
