How to Improve Your Public Speaking Skills
Category : Personal Development
I bet when some of you read that word you got nervous. Maybe your palms started sweating or your collar got a bit tighter. I promise you’re not alone. Millions of people around the world suffer from the fear of public speaking.
When I first started my Network Marketing business I was in the exact same boat. You wouldn’t have caught me dead at the front of the room speaking to a group of more than about five people.
the best thing about MLM is the person whom you can become in the process. For me, I decided that public speaking was one of the areas in my life that I wanted to improve upon.
Here’s what I did.
I took the shortest portion of our business presentation and set out to learn how to present it. I wrote it down word for word and then read it over and over again until I had a pretty good grasp of it. From there I practiced speaking it out loud in my office, by myself, and eventually I was able to say it from memory.
This is where my most critical piece of advice comes into play. The biggest reason people are so afraid of public speaking is because they don’t know their material well enough.
If you know your material well enough you will go into a sort of autopilot. The words just begin to pour out of you without you having to think very hard about it. The fear comes from the unknown. If you don’t know your material backwards and forwards, then you start to ad lib. That’s where people usually trip up.
I then took on the task of learning bigger and bigger sections of the business presentation. I used the same technique on each section until I could do the whole presentation backwards and forwards regardless of who was in the room.
From there it all just becomes revisionary. Each time you speak in public pick one quirk that you have that you’d like to change and make a conscious effort to eliminate that habit. For me I started with the “um’s” and then moved on to my nervous tick, which was swaying back and forth.
Now, because I learn my material before I go in front of the room, I can speak in public with no problems.
Top Earner’s Tip: When you are the one at the front of the room speaking in public make sure you know your material like the back of your hand. If you can just imagine that you are the person in the room who knows this subject the best you won’t care if you slip up. You’ll be the only one who knows the difference anyways, right?
